Three countries in three seconds

A cairn was built in 1897 by Russians and Norwegians to mark the border of the three kingdoms - Norway, Sweden and Russia (now Finland). Treriksröset is Sweden's most northerly point and also the northernmost tripoint in the world. The current cement form was built in 1926.

The cairn that divides Sweden, Norway and Finland. The hiking trail to Treriksröset begins in Kilpisjärvi, located about 300 km east of Kiruna. The easiest way is to go there by car which takes around four hours. You can also take the bus from Kiruna to Karesuando, a trip that takes about three hours. You spend the night in Karesuando and then walk over to Finnish Karesuvanto about 1 km, where you continue by bus on to Kilpisjärvi, a trip that takes about one and a half hours.

Once in Kilpisjärvi you can choose the hiking trail of 11 km, passing through Finland’s oldest national park Malla from 1916. Alternatively, travel with the tourist boat M/S Malla to Koltaluokta which is an old Sámi settlement. The boat trip takes about 45 minutes and then only 3 km of the hike remains. The boat stops at the beach and waits for about two hours. You can also choose to combine with both boat and hiking. The suggestion is then to take the boat there and walk back. The boat runs between midsummer and the end of September.

In the winter you can get to Treriksröset by snowmobile or skis.
