Sámi Siida – Márkanbáiki (spring)

Márkanbáiki is an easily accessible, vibrant meeting place in Jukkasjärvi for visitors from near and far who want to engage their senses to experience Sápmi. Learn about reindeer, stroll through the outdoor exhibition area and try traditional Sámi food in charming Café Sápmi. As a reminder of your visit you surely find some special item in our on-site handicraft shop.

The term márkanbáiki means assembly or market place in North Sámi language and this historical site here is the origin of the village of Jukkasjärvi and a wonderful place for a day visit. Bures boahtin Sápmái – Welcome to Sápmi!  In our exhibition venue you can learn about the culture, traditions, nomadic lifestyle and the history of the reindeer herding Sámi people.

In Café Sápmi, our giant lávvu-like restaurant with a fireplace in the centre, we serve traditional Sámi food with a modern twist. Reindeer meat and fish are traditional parts of Sámi cuisine that is about pure taste, quality and care for animals and nature. So why not rounding off your visit with a local food experience? Drinking a cup of fresh, boiled coffee is then the icing on the cake. We also offer berry pastries, coffee cheese and refreshments.

As a reminder of your stay you can visit our on-site handicraft shop to find the most unique gifts. We offer only the best of local Sámi handicraft, duodji. Among the crafts you find reindeer pelts and antler designs, Sámi silver jewellery and much more.

Our most appreciated companions, the reindeer, are grazing here at the shores of river Torne until 26 April. Up until then our knowledgeable guide will share some facts and stories about our reindeer and jointly feed them with you during the guided tour “Giđđaguossi”. At the end of April, the reindeer will move to other grounds where they can be visited during the special tour “Miessemánnu – Reindeer calf month May”. On 5 June the reindeer are back in Jukkasjärvi again when summer season kicks in.
