In order to reach the northernmost point in Sweden it becomes necessary to have a great deal of time. The total distance from Kiruna to Kilpisjärvi is approximately 300 km by road, and from Kilpisjärvi to Treriksröset another 11 km by foot. It is possible to reduce the walking distance to 3 km by catching a boat over the lake Övre Kilpisjärvi.

There are departures by bus from Kiruna to Karesuando which take about 3.5 hours (180 km). The following day the bus continues from Karesuvanto – 1 km across the border, on the Finnish side – to Kilpisjärvi. The busride takes about 1.5 hours (110 km).

During the summer, boats depart from Kilpisjärvi. The ride takes about 45 minutes and depart three times daily during the high season, which lasts from the beginning of July until the middle of August. On other occasions it becomes necessary to book in advance. The total length of the trip is estimated to 3 hours.

If there is time for a stop in Karesuando, it is possible to visit the Laestadii log cabin, which is an historical monument named after the founder of Laestadianism, Lars Levi Laestadius. The church in Karesuando, constructed out of timber, should also be paid a visit. The magnificent view and the midnight sun are best seen from the top of the mountain Kaarevaara which is reached by a short hike, with or without a guide.
