Sámi Siida – Márkanbáiki (summertime)

Sámi Siida is a reconstructed Sámi camp on the old Sámi market place that is origin for the village of Jukkasjärvi. Grazing reindeer, exhibitions about Sámi culture and livelihoods are found here. Sámi slow food lunch is served by the fire in giant lávvu-tent; and genuine Sámi handicraft is available for purchase.

Sámi Camp with reindeer

A Sámi camp is a temporary housing and workplace where one or more herding Sámi families tend to spend parts of the year. At Sámi Siida, which is a reconstructed Sámi camp, you learn about our history and traditions as a nomadic people. We will show you how we lived in the past and how we live today. Sámi Siida is an experience for young and old, where you can gain an insight into the life of one of the world’s indigenous people – the Sámi people. You can also meet our companions, the reindeer, and have the opportunity to get them really close in our corral. We will tell you about the reindeer, how they live, what they eat, and talk about the myths and magic that surround them. You can learn more about how reindeer herding is done and you can try throwing the lasso at reindeer horns.

Sámi cuisine in Café Sápmi

Inside the on-site’s giant lávvu-tent you can settle down, enjoy the open fire and savour traditional Sápmi slow food lunch prepared over the open flames. Reindeer meat and fish are essential parts of Sámi cuisine; and it is about pure taste, quality and care for animals and nature. We claim to serve the world’s best suovas, i.e. traditionally lightly-salted, cold-smoked reindeer meat in slices. Drinking a cup of boiled coffee from a sooty kettle is then the icing on the cake! We serve lunch between 11:00 and 15:00.

The atmosphere will mesmerise you and make your stay at ours surely delightful.

Sámi handicraft shop

Inside the wooden building is a crafts section and shop where you can see our traditional craftsmanship, largely using materials like reindeer horn and reindeer leather. There is a range of traditional and modern Sámi arts and crafts and souvenirs available for purchase.
