Come and eat with us!
Food is very important in Kiruna. Hunting and fishing have been central features in man’s everyday existence for a very long time, and in Kiruna they are still very important features. When you start talking to a Kiruna resident, you will soon find that cooking and its traditions are of great interest to them. Food equals culture in Kiruna!
As a visitor to Kiruna you will have no problem finding good and tasty food. Even if you are hiking out into the mountain world, you can still reward yourself with a delicious dinner. Experiencing the food is a part of your journey and we venture to say that the food here deserves to be experienced! So never mind packing a full week’s worth of freeze-dried food in your backpack, relieve your motor home of a few extra kilos and simply allow Kiruna to serve some of your meals instead!
There are many nice restaurants to choose from in the centre of Kiruna, all with knowledgeable staff available to suggest beverages to complement the beautifully prepared dishes from the region. Some mix local with international and you can find tapas eateries as well as whiskey bars, sushi and Thai restaurants. Some offer both food and decorations inspired by the Sámi culture. How about a classic menu while taking in the views of Mount Kebnekaise? In summer some of the restaurants offer outdoor seating with a view. In this part of the world you will find reindeer meat on the menu when visiting cafés and hamburger joints.
Granted, there are more mountain peaks than restaurants in the mountain world, but you are guaranteed to have the opportunity to replenish your energy. The area offers everything from fancy restaurants with magnificent views of the Lapporten valley, to simpler fare such as reindeer burgers at Lap Dånalds, located by Lake Ladtjojaure on your way to or from Mount Kebnekaise.
